Intuitive and Mindful Eating Guidance

Eating Acai

Free yourself from perpetual dieting

When was the last time you asked yourself what you felt like eating? Not what you should or shouldn't eat but what you really fancied eating? So many of us have "rules" around food and we have lost touch with just eating for enjoyment and satisfaction.

Intuitive eating is an evidence based framework that helps people to establish a positive relationship with food, exercise and their bodies.

It is made up of 10 principles:

1) Ditch the diet mentality. Did you know that over 80% of diets end in failure, often with people regaining more weight than they lost in the first place.

2) Recognise your hunger. Learn how to eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full.

3) Make peace with food. Stop demonising some foods and putting others on a pedestal. By having forbidden foods and banning them from your diet you are only making them more desirable!

4) Challenge the food police. Silence the voice in your head that tells you you're "bad" for eating a biscuit or "good" for turning it down.

5) Re-discover the satisfaction factor. When we become preoccupied with good vs bad food, we often forget that one of the fundamental reasons to eat is to feel satisfied.

6) Feel your fullness. Take your time with eating and understand when you've had enough.

7) Learn to cope with your emotions without using food. This is a big one but finding other ways of dealing with feelings like boredom, stress and loneliness is a game changer and a huge step towards intuitive and mindful eating.

8) Respect your body. Accept that we are all different shapes and sizes and the body image you currently perceive as ideal may not be realistic for you.

9) Exercise and feel the difference. Move your body in a way that makes you feel good, mentally and physically. Exercise that you do for enjoyment is much more likely to be sustainable in the long term.

10) Honour your health. Eat foods that make you feel good. Some foods are especially good for our bodies, some foods are good for our soul! All foods have a place in our diet.
